CraftCon 2019 Shines Spotlight on Craft Cidermaking

The inaugural CraftCon, a conference on craft cidermaking, will take place at Pershore College on Friday 5 April. One of the key projects for 2019 announced at the recent AGM of the Three Counties Cider & Perry Association, the meeting will put the art and skill of craft cidermaking centre stage.

Confirmed speakers in this full-day event include Tom Oliver on blending – Blend In. Stand Out. It’s Your Shout, Simon Day of Once Upon A Tree, taking on bottle conditioning and traditional method fermentation, Exploding Myths, and Pilton Cider’s Martin Berkeley on keeving, Arrested Development.

Yeast comes under the spotlight with Sigrid Gertsen-Schibbye of Lallemand, while James Marsden, Gregg’s Pit, covers the art of record-keeping with The Devil’s in the Detail, and the Ciderologist, Gabe Cook, cider director of The Academy of Beer & Cider, will run a faults masterclass, Senses Working Overtime.

The morning will close with a panel discussion covering the role of branding and modern routes to market chaired by Susanna Forbes, one half of Little Pomona and beer & cider editor at Imbibe. Gabe Cook will lead the closing panel, exploring the future of cider.

Mini-Cider Workshops at lunchtime plus a Cider Share and social event in the evening will afford plenty of time for discussion and tastings. Pershore College is able to offer delegates reasonably-priced accommodation on campus.

Chair of the TCCPA, James Forbes’ hope is that this conference will become an exciting and useful date in the calendar for the growing number of craft cidermakers. “Part of our remit is education,” he says. “We want to bring everyone together to share ideas in the hope that we can all make better cider. This will be a one-of-a-kind networking opportunity, the chance to meet cidermakers and others in the cider industry from around the UK.”

The Association welcomes members from both within and outside the Three Counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. Membership is open to producers, those in the cider and drinks industry, and those purely interested in cider and perry.
